Happy New Year

I'm assuming most of my friends do not read my blog, and at this moment I'm hoping they don't. Because I am sending some of them this as a physical card and wouldn't it be a whole lot more fun if they didn't see it before getting it in their mailbox?

As you can see, I drew our little family (my mum, mum's boyfriend, my brother and me), my brother drew an outline and, as always, my mum wrote the greeting. (Oops, I forgot to make Hans, mum's boyfriend, do something!)

Anyways, happy new year, everyone! :)

And if you're interested, here's last another year's card.

Lae178 in Ymere Werkt

As you know, I won a scholarship a few months ago.
The scholarship was funded by my urban district, Amsterdam West, and the housing corporation Ymere. Ymere has a magazine for their ..relations? (Excuse me, I do not know the proper English term here..) In this magazine, Ymere Werkt (Ymere Working), is a column consisting of an image and an accompanying description. The subject for the latest issue was this particular competition, so I was asked to contribute.
So here it is!

For those who speak Dutch, or those who took the insane effort to transcribe all this text and google translate it:
the information given is, unfortunately, faulty. Even though I like always being thought to be 17 years old (hey, my nickname is even Seventeen, so I identify with being 17) , I am not 17 anymore.
Also, I did not make a photographic collection (bestaat 'vierluik' in het Engels?) about people living in North Korea. I did make figurative paintings about the daily life in South Korea.

But anyways, it's the first time for me that an illustration by me was published in a magazine, so yay! (well, okay, W.I.T.C.H. once put a drawing I made in their mailbox section when I was like 11, but let's not mention that.) What d'you think? :)
I tried to keep in line with how that column is usually done. While my drawing is very very different from the photographic, photoshopped compilations Buro Met usually makes, I tried to keep the collage structure and use at least one building. (the building you see is actually quite typical and recognisable for the Westerpark, the park where the events took place and that's 5 minutes from my house!)

Fun facts:
  • I first wanted to also post my sketches, but.. there's only a few and those are in blue pencil, so you wouldn't even see much.
  • I actually own that exact outfit and yes, I do look cute like that.
  • The people I drew in blue are the other kids who won something and I drew Anna (the photography girl) and Said (the drumming boy) in the clothes they wore at the awards.

Well, if you read the whole text, I applaud you and ask you to leave me a comment; you've already spent so much time on this post so you might as well spent another minute. ;)

uncle Sjoerd

Here's a portrait I did of my 'uncle' Sjoerd. It was a request by a family member for his birthday.
During that same period, I also made some portraits of another family friend and her partner. Unfortunately I don't have scans of those (only some in progress pics, no finished product) but I'll post them if I do get those.

from the USA to South Korea

It has already been quite a while since a friend of mine asked me to draw a portrait of his parents.
He has been studying in the USA for 10 years and has not been able to go back to see his parents in Korea. They have visited him and his brother, but as you can imagine, they still don't see each other in person that often...
So to show his appreciation towards them, he asked me to draw their portrait.
So I did, with his help, this is the result.
(sorry for the low quality picture, since my computer broke down, I lost the scans I had and used this photo from my mobile phone)

Lae might be cool.

I really did not grab a pink marker on purpose, only while I was writing it, I realised I wasn't even writing 'why I'm COOL' in a cool manner... oops.
(not that pink can't be cool! please don't be offended if you like pink. Or if you are pink. I am pink. And I'm cool.. well no, not really. But other pink people might be cool)

Sketches

I tried drawing with my left hand again.. and this time I also wrote something! with left! that is my handwriting! with left!

I tried to draw some characters from a movie I really liked. I won't tell you which movie, but I will show you another drawing done with my left hand, also based on movieposters for that specific movie.
Do you know this movie?

Vesper

I will add another comic to the 'bad weather' post later, so don't forget about that one! :)
(I don't have that one on my notebook, hence I'm first uploading this one)

non-comics coming soon too! ˆˆ

Cheers

Yes! A new full color comic!

(actually, I toasted with uncle and Mi apart, we didn't toast all three at the same time)

can you make up some captions?

A few days ago I met my grandparents and when my grandpa looked at my sketchbook, he had a remark...
For the first drawing he saw, he said it needed a funny caption, that it looked like the kind of drawing that needs, deserves, would go well with, a caption.
So I looked through my sketchbook and picked out some caption-deserving drawings.

Can you think of good captions to go with these sketches? please comment/send them here!

this was that first sketch grandpa saw

Ali Javaid, fashion expert

Ali's portrait in my ONE SHOT series, this was one of the first portraits I did
Let me tell you about one of my best friends: Ali.
...I don't even know how to start! I could write a long description of our friendship and how important he's been in my life.. but that might bore you or keep you from reading this post. So I won't.

I WILL tell you that Ali has a passion.
That is fashion, this guy is always busy with fashion. Not only is he an expert on designers and models, he also designs and makes clothing himself!

And now he is participating in a fashion designing competition in Amsterdam!
This competition is looking to advance diversity in the world of fashion, with young designers with European, Asian, African and Arabic roots. They will present their perspective on fashion.

I am sure he will do great, because this is what he does and he is confident in what he makes.
Curious?
Let me help you in getting to know our Ali:

and here is the website of the fashion competition:

Tuesday 29 October 2013

I recently came across this little comic.
It is actually about the same person as this one!
not.. that is about someone specific.. I meant to say.. it is from the same period! yes yes!
But yeah, I'm sometimes like that, I think most people are.

hum.. I had more things I wanted to post here.. but I forgot what those were.. please excuse my scatterbrain!

Scholarship; part two

It is a bit late, but I should post this here; the results of the competition I participated in...

I asked you guys to vote for me, and also to send a copy of your vote to my personal e-mail adress (I will still make the promised drawings for those who 'won'). I didn't receive all that much emails actually, so I would certainly not have guessed that 198 people voted for me!

And with those 198 votes, I had won the public's choice' prize!!!

(I'm sorry, you know.. if you take pictures from a low angle, they will probably not end up all that flattering, I didn't like the original picture enough to post it.. hihi, but you can find it easily yourself if you really want to see it)

My friend, Anna, who was also a participant, won second place!

after that, they started introducing the winner of the first prize. They started by

a few more (:
Haven't even posted the last ones on facebook yet! (this is why you should just follow my blog ;p)
now also with little stories

I haven't seen this guy in a long while, we used to be part of the same group of friends. With that group, we had a lot of parties.. much fun was had.

Monday 23 September 2013

three short comics

I haven't posted new stuff in a while.
That is for two reasons, one being my computer had some problems, causing me unable to use it. and the second.. I was in Venice to see the Biennale.
But now I'm back! :D

to make up for not posting in a while, here are three short comics.

some couple

I think the contrast in styles for this drawing worked out pretty well.

I wanted to try out some techniques I used before, again...

Wednesday 28 August 2013

scholarship

Have you been reading this blog and wondering.. 'what does she look like?' 'how does her voice sound?' 'what does her living room look like?'
(probably not, I expect most of my readers are people who have met me or are my facebook friends...)
well, now you can find out!!!
This drawing is part of an animation in my video! (it's me! I'm wearing that exact outfit in the video)

I made this video for a competition held in my city district for young talent.
you can vote for me by sending an email to wiewintdebeurs2013@west.amsterdam.nl  in which you state your own name, adres and postal code, MY name (Laetitia Schafer) and the title of my video (Lae 178).
Voting is possible up to the third of September. 13/09/03!!
Please do do do vote, it would really help and then I can pretend I have fans!
and after sending your vote, you can forward it to me, and for each fifth vote, I'll make a drawing!

here's a reference drawing I made for my character

So actually I wasn't planning to reveal my face on this blog and remain 'mysterious' for a while. And if I was, I wanted to first give you an idea by showing you drawings others made of me. (yes, yes, there has been fanart made of me! okay, done by friends, not exactly fans...) But I had to wait too long for one of my friends to mail me a scan or picture.
That post WILL come though, some are really good (thanks, Ha <3), some funny and one is simply hilarious (Jinhwan.. I am treasuring that drawing!).

MORE tips on meeting girls

HOW TO GET IN TOUCH WITH GIRLS IN THE CLUB IN KOREA! *\(0_ __0)/* part two

So these are all based on how people tried to engage in social interaction with us in clubs in Korea. But I don't think these methods are typical for Korea, but hey, it's still interesting!

yup, there was an ahjussi inviting my friend and me to his friend's 40th birthday. in reality I was standing next to my friend, whispering 'no, no, no, say noooo.' while she was politely listening to that ahjussi.

Miscellaneous of Korea

These two illustrations are based on photos I took in Korea.

This one doesn't need much explanation, I think.

One Shot's

Another batch of One Shot's!
Actually, I'm not really sure about the order, I will look at that and then post them chronically on my other blog: https://laetitia178.wordpress.com/
there you can find the whole series of One Shot in good quality! (:
I also usually post a little description with my portraits on facebook, should I post those descriptions here too? let me know if you're interested.

Saturday 24 August 2013

busy Lae

I accidentally wrote 'a' and 'lot' a bit too close to each other.. but I do know it's 'a lot', 'alot' is something entirely different.
I actually don't produce stuff that fast, well, not if it's stuff I was planning to make. The spontaneous stuff, like this, I usually make pretty quickly.

I should save these little comics in the future, so I can put up a lot at once each time, it feels kinda weird making a blog post only for one little doodle.

Meet my dad

this one's so realistic.. I even based my drawing of my dad on a picture of him lying on our couch, reading the Donald Duck. ;)

that was actually a day to be proud about for me. Dad visited and when he arrived, he asked me 'Have you bought any interesting comics that I might read lately?'
yes, we are equals now, lending comics to each other.

Tuesday 20 August 2013

Bored

This is typically me.

yes! another comic in color!!
please comment: what do you prefer? black-n-white or color? I myself think that black-n-white ink looks nicer for these comics.

Really, there's so much stuff I want to do but just don't do. And not only 'useful' stuff like learning a language, also watching tv.. haha, there isn't ONE show I've watched until the end this year. (and there's a lot of shows I need to catch up to, so don't recommend me any!!)
Probably because everything I do, I do in the evening. That's when I get active.
I draw in the evening, meet up with friends in the evening, watch movies in the evening, work in the evening. So obviously, that doesn't really fit. ;-p
(and think of stuff I could've done during the day.. oops.)

Now I have to watch out.. if this post will sound like I feel bad about those things, my family will talk to me about it. But don't worry, mum, I'm okay!

sooo, sampi nanti!
('kau bisa bicara bahasa Indonesia??'
'sedikit saja.')

walking with a phone

after a while, here's a new comic. this time it's in color! wooh wooh

Bojan

Bojan is a soccer player, but since I don't watch soccer, my first association was 'that sounds like Trojan.'
and the '11' looked like a pause button, I think this does not need explanation.

Friday 16 August 2013

boys in Korea

so this is actually maybe a bit mean, but it was not meant in a mean manner... ;p
during our stay in Korea, every now and then some guys would some up and chat with us. We referred to them by characterizing them.
For instance, when one guy would talk to us while his friend waited, we'd discuss in Dutch:
'So they probably decided that the one with a round face should talk to us because his English is better..?'
'But I heard the one with glasses talk too, they're the same.'
'Then.. they regard him as the most handsome?'

tips on meeting girls

HOW TO GET IN TOUCH WITH GIRLS IN THE CLUB IN KOREA! *\(0_ __0)/*

To be honest, I don't really go to the clubs in Amsterdam often, so all of the things I noticed about the clubs in Korea might also apply to Amsterdam clubs.

But this.. I'm pretty sure this is a typical Korean thing; grabbing a girl by her wrist.
It happened pretty often that my friend and I were just walking in the club, headed to the bar, the bathroom or maybe the stairs, and one of us suddenly got grabbed by some guy.
The first time it happened to me, we were headed to the bathroom and someone I hadn't met before grabbed me and told me 'Don't leave.' I did leave though.
My friend really did get pulled to a table one time, of course she'd dragged me with her.

For me, it was quite a funny thing to experience. Until now, I'd only seen this kind of things in tv-dramas.

UPDATED: 대한민국 여행

I had wanted to post these sketches before but I forgot because.. I was too busy having fun in South Korea!
That's right, these sketches are made in Korea!
I would post context with them but this is only the second time for me to update my blog with my smartphone and also.. my plane is almost leaving! Gotta hurry, enjoy!

EDIT: I have updated this post with descriptions, please check it out. ^^

doodle

Today I spent my afternoon cleaning up the guest room (well, okay, it's still somewhat full but.. at least I've sorted out about 20% or so) and I have to go now.
I had wanted to make some illustrations I'd promised someone, but didn't get to it in the end, but here is a quick doodle I did a while ago.
I like it! ^^

commissioned portraits

another batch of finished portraits. ^^
Today I handed them to the customers, it was so good to see they genuinely liked them! :D
all of these portraits were commissioned by the parents of these boys.

my childish sculptures

when I was young (I'm still young, *ha ha ha evil laugh*, but this was age.. 8-12 approximately) I made these two tiny sculptures of a man and a woman. they were dancing and lean on each other (if you'd manage to get them apart, they'd probably fall over).
a while ago my dad asked me to make some new ones like those, so I did.

let's start with the original one!
